Toulon Airport’s History
First built in 1925, Toulon Airport – or Toulon Hyères Airport – was originally a military base used by the French navy. The base was home to both aircraft and naval vessels, alongside commercial air traffic. During the Second World War, the airport ceased its function as a civil aviation hub and, in 1944, the airport itself was severely damaged. After the end of the war and a lengthy period of reconstruction, the navy resumed flights from Toulon and opened a pilot training school. Gradually, many of the base’s military functions were transferred to Brittany and civilian air traffic began again in 1967
The military continued to use Toulon (TLN) Airport as a training facility until 1990. In 1978, one of the two runways was extended to 2,120 metres to allow for the take-off and landing of large-capacity aircraft. In 1998, the civilian terminal underwent an extensive modernisation and expansion programme. Every year, almost 500,000 passengers travel through Toulon Airport on nearly 10,000 flight movements. Thanks to the airport’s extensive facilities, passengers flying on private jets to Toulon can enjoy the highest standard of service.
